It would be fair to say that most energy policies in 2024 are based on realpolitic pandering rather than science or cost/benefit analysis.
In fact, were science and cost/benefit factors the primary determinant, energy would be much more available and affordable for both developed and developing nations.
Cheap and reliable energy is essential for modern industrial societies to flourish and equally important for underdeveloped nations to break the political chains that have choked their opportunities for economic progress.

Guest: Robert Zubrin – was awarded his first patent at age 20 in 1972 for Three Player Chess. He holds a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester (1974); he earned a M.S. in Nuclear Engineering (1984), a M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics (1986), and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering (1992) — all from the University of Washington. He has developed a number of concepts for space propulsion and exploration, and is the author of over 200 technical and non-technical papers and several books. He is also President of both the Mars Society and Pioneer Astronautics, a private company that does research and development on innovative aerospace technologies. Zubrin is the co-inventor on a U.S. design patent and a U.S. utility patent on a hybrid rocket/airplane, and on a U.S. utility patent on an oxygen supply system. His inventions include the nuclear salt-water rocket and co-inventor (with Dana Andrews) of the magnetic sail. Zubrin is fellow at Center for Security Policy. He is an outspoken advocate of unhampered free market innovation and the value of human intervention in resolving scientific and technical challenges in a world of unlimited resources.
Sources of affordable and abundant energy are everywhere……..the only thing stopping their development being radical environmentalism and useful idiots in elected and appointed government offices that have the luxury of playing Santa Claus with other peoples money and freedom.
The contemporary environmental movement is collectivist to the core; being zero-sum flat earthers in their approach to resource and economic development.
They have methodically gained control over the realpolitic/big business/ NGO realm until most contemporary energy policies are mired in zero-sum Maltheusian thinking that is clearly anti-development, avoiding objective science in favor of questionable sustainability goals that are clearly subjective.
Fear is also a useful weapon in the environmentalist tool box. Starting as early as pre-school, children are taught that modern man is the most dangerous species on the planet, and that industrialization is the number one enemy of planetary survival.
Children are taught that economic development is greed; the primary cause of environmental damage, while collectivism and anti-development will save the planet for future generations.
hey are taught that global warming caused by man will make the planet uninhabitable within a few decades unless globalist U.N. technocrats are given complete control of all future development with humans abandoning their current lifestyles and returning to a pre-industrial existence with few modern conveniences.
They are told that carbon dioxide is the primary cause for concern……increasing at an alarming rate; almost 100% caused by human activity and overdevelopment.
Objective science is rarely part of this indoctrination process.
The fact that CO2 makes up less than .04 percent of the earth's atmosphere and is mostly water vapor and naturally occurring through photosynthesis is left unmentioned.
The fact that man's CO2 contribution to that tiny fraction of our atmosphere is only .03% or .0012 percent of the total atmosphere is left out of the discussion.
The fact that CO2 is the gas of life; that all plants thrive, produce more oxygen, and require less water on higher levels of CO2 is also conveniently left out of the discussion.
The fact that the Earth is currently in a CO2 drought and that most epochs during the past billion years CO2 levels were significantly higher is also left out of the discussion.
If this is all true, which it is, why are flat earth environmentalists doing this?
The answer is clearly; “sustainable development” has nothing to do with real science and everything to do with Marxist “realpolitic”.
Now let's talk about the ties between Marxist realpolitic and the actual production and use of energy for the betterment of society.
We are being told that only certain types of energy production are “sustainable” and that all others must be eliminated for a cleaner and healthier world.
We are told that wind and solar power generation are “renewable” and coal, natural gas and hydroelectric are old fashioned, not carbon neutral, and therefore bad for the environment.
We are told that nuclear energy is dangerous and poses an insurmountable risk to the environment, primarily from hazardous waste disposal issues.
Scientific deep thinkers like: Jane Fonda, Al Gore, AOC, Barack Obama and Joe Biden have decided that we must adopt their green energy policies regardless the economic cost, spending $trillions in subsidies and increased electrical rates to assure a “green” and “sustainable” future.
The enormous economic cost and physical resources to produce wind generators and solar panels; not to mention reliability, actual energy produced, the enormous amounts of land required for siting, seasonal efficiency, and under-disclosed environmental impacts of “sustainable” energy sources belie the true costs of going green.
Meanwhile, we are destroying hydro-electric production that is truly sustainable, affordable, and reliable to satisfy eco-nuts that use delta smelt and endangered species to justify the de-industrializing our economy therein ending centuries of economic and social progress at the altar of sustainable development.
America's clean-coal power generation is being dismantled posthaste as China fires up one dirty coal plant a week without comment from the Marxist left.
American nuclear energy, which is generations behind in bringing cutting edge power plants online because of realpolitic and anti-nuke radicalism, provides the clearest path to carbon neutral “sustainable” energy, but faces the strongest headwinds.
Although nuclear technology is light years advanced since the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fear mongers on the left have convinced a majority of Americans that the risks are far too great to take the chance.
Nearly 70 years of proven safety with U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers is somehow marginalized, while every nuclear mishap is magnified exponentially, making the permitting process so time consuming, expensive and filled with realpolitic futility that investors are few and far between.
America is losing its technological edge and is in the process of losing free market progress to liars and political hacks that relish the thought of bringing the American free market system and our technological exceptionalism to its knees.
It's time for Americans to stand for what we know to be true and stop the destruction of our energy sector by collectivists that seek our defeat as a nation of free thinkers and innovators.
The fate of the whole world and those seeking economic freedom look to Americans for leadership. It's time to accept that challenge and reclaim our energy sector.
